My first book nook, Tolkien inspired

It's been some time since my last entry, but I have been working on something special.  My wedding anniversary was last month, and I wanted to make something really special for my husband.  I already gave him a gift that he wanted very much, but I wanted to give him also something from the heart.  He is a lover of Tolkien's work, so I thought, what better way to give him something that he can (somehow) use?  A book nook!

My idea was for him to put it among his Tolkien books, but in the end he decided to place it in his work room, among his comics books, so he can look at it - it even has lights!

I found a lovely shop that were selling empty book nooks, very affordable, and pretty, and that was my first stop - by the way, I strongly recommend them.  The only bad thing was that the package took a long time to arrive, and it was not going to be ready for the anniversary - oh well, these things happen.  So to increase the effect of surprise I waited until he was out of the house for a few days, giving some lessons in another part of the country - I had to work fast!  On the bright side, the kit was amazingly cut, and there were instructions included to make things even easier.  So the work started.  First, I built the exterior part, and attached the included string of LED lights:

While the glue was setting, I printed the image that was going to be on the window; the kit included several landscapes, but we preferred that the image was coming from Tolkien's imagination as he was writing.  So hubby chose a drawing of Gandalf fighting the Balrog, and I made it in transparency paper, like the ones the kit included.

Then I arranged the lights so they would illuminate well the image:

Gluing the interior walls to each other came next - but I did not glue them to the base.  I thought it would be easier to put the decorative wallpaper without them being already attached:

You can see how the outside light is changing as the day goes by... So I stopped here for the day.

Next day work: decorating!! My favorite part.  I printed a lovely wallpaper made by Evona, of Artsy Miniatures, and cut it to measure for the walls:

Cutting the hole for the window.  No worries, as the window frame will cover any mistakes

I absolutely love the integrated shelf!

As you can see, there was a tiny bit at the top of the walls that was not covered, so I improvised a cornice, and finally glued down the inside walls:

Looking good!

Next step, staining the window frame.  That was the last thing of the day that I did, so it would be dry for next day's work session:

Not even enough light to take a pic, lol!

Next day were the final tweakings.  First, gluing on the window:

Then, arraging the final lights in the ceiling so the scene has a litte more light - I wanted to wallpaper the ceiling too, but I finally gave it up so the lights would be brighter:

Now it is almost done!  Only lacking the floor, for which I chose a lovely French parquet:

Gorgeous design and colors!

My job was finished.  I still had to glue the front frame and decorate the outside.  But I wanted hubby's opinion on that, and waited until he came back.  I suggested we put a Tolkien book cover on the sides, but he preferred simply to stain the wood, so that's what I did:

For the decorations, I kept it simple: a writing desk with a vintage typewriter, some empty pages and some already typed, a pair of glasses, and a pipe resting on an ashtray - Tolkien smoked tobacco pipes.  There is also a framed map of Middle Earth in the wall, and an umbrella hanging on the back of the chair - that damned English weather!

I am very happy how well it turned out!  Hubby said he liked it a lot, and proceed to put it in a place of honor, very near his working table.  He kept it lit all day!

Link sharing

I admit it, I love necklaces.  I get the most excited when I found out that a movie or series I like has developed jewelry accessories for the fans.  I think it is a very subtle way of showing your support for something without being too obvious, which sometimes can be tricky in a place with a dressing code such as school or office environment.

Sometimes these replicas are official merchandise; sometimes they are not, but it is because an official replica was never made or it was sold out.

I think the first one I ever had was Arwen's  pendant from the Lord of the Rings.  We bought it locally when the movie came out, and it was the sterling silver version - it was the only one available then, and all the crystals had the same length.  The one they made later resembles more the one in the movie, but still, I like it very much.  We also bought the Nenya ring that belonged to Galadriel, and of course, the One Ring in sterling silver.  There are plenty of places you can still buy these, but my favorites are Tolkien Town and Tolkien Shop.

Later it was Lucian's necklace from the Underwold series; we would discover later it belonged to his beloved Sonya, but I think it is fair to say it was his necklace more than hers:

There never was official merchandise for this movie- or if there was, I never found it; so I purchased this necklace from a vendor on Ebay called Costumebase.  They have a great collection of movies and series memorabilia, so they are worth a look. UPDATE: It seems Costumebase is no longer on eBay, but you still can get Lucian's pendant here.

Then came the Vampire Diaries locket - the one Stefan gave to Elena and belonged to Rebekah and her mother:

There are a lot of vendors on Ebay who have replicas of this necklace; I got mine from djingang2009. UPDATE: It seems djingang2009 is no longer on eBay, but I suspect this seller is her.

Just recently, I bought an H2O locket.  The places to buy this piece are limited and more so as days go by.  You have the official Australian replica, which has sold out and is no longer available (unless you find a particular willing to sell you his/hers); you have the Spanish version:

This one is available at Amazon and eBay (1) and (2)  You also have the German version:

Available at the H2O Shop.  And then, you have my favorite, and the one that I got, from Sterling Silver Art:

These are made of sterling silver, and you can choose which stone you want added, instead of only a plastic moodstone.  They are available at the Sterling Silver Art website, Amazon and her Etsy shop.  You can even get a rolo chain upgrade (the locket comes with a free link chain) and the pretty shell box you can see in the picture (both upgrades cost a bit extra).  I will post a review on this purchase soon. UPDATE: She has a new velvet shell box in blue that you can buy with your purchase or separately.

This one I have not got yet - but I have every intention to save for it so I can buy it in the future.  It is the locket from the movie The Illusionist:
Picture from the Illusion Locket website
This is an amazing piece of work.  Each locket is hand-made, and it works exactly the same as the one in the movie.  You can even store safely two pictures inside.  You can buy it at the Illusionist Lockets website.

Even though I am always interested in buying sterling silver replicas, I understand this is not possible for everyone.  Even so, if you are a big, big fan, I would advice to wait a bit, see if you really want the replica and get the one that will last the most.  Why? Because if you are a big, big fan, chances are you will still love the series or the movie several years later, and you will want a prop that resists the passing of time so you can use it more.

Some other times we outgrow our interest for TV series or movies, and a metal or cheap replica will become rusted, or maybe broken with use or time.  Then you'll see it and think, "oh, that piece of junk I bought when I used to like the show".  If you get a lasting one, the love you had for the series may be gone, but you will have a real jewel you can use in everyday wear, store to use in the future, or to pass on to your children.  After all, we are talking about sterling silver lockets and rings.  Movie merchandise is more difficult to pass on, but who knows? Maybe your kids will love the same movies you used to love...

Here is another website I have perused for movie merchandise:
The Noble Collection

Now, do you know of any websites you can purchase well-made and amazing replicas?  Share them in the comments!

A hobbit's doll house

Some time ago, I blogged about the idea of making a hobbit hole as dollhouse. Well, somebody else had the same idea, and just recently came across a blog in LiveJournal. ObeliaMedusa had posted some fabulous pictures of her astonishing hobbit dollhouse. Take a look, because this is a delightful work!

Celebrating the first post with a tutorial...

... And it could not be in any other way, it is about miniatures!

My dollhouse began as many others, as a boring Victorian style dollhouse. But after moving to the United States and began my crafting, I decided that the overrated Victorian parlors were not good enough for me. So I decided to transform my common dollhouse into something more uncommon, but very popular these days...

Think about Diagon Alley, and how the houses there could be... A charming exterior, no doubt, but the inside is what gives me the freedom to explore! I am fortunate enough to own a dollhouse with a shop, and no kitchen! "Good", I thought to myself. "Vampires don't need kitchens, anyway..." So you can say that the owner of my house is a charming vampire lady with a magic shop - more fitted to Knockturn Alley than Diagon Alley, if you follow me...

Anyway, this lady is a great admirer of J. R. R. Tolkien - some say that she knew him very closely - and she has just added a Middle Earth map to her bedroom.

The idea of the map came after I purchased some lovely mini-books featuring The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings series and The Silmarillion. Want your own set of books? Try Miniature Bookshelf!

I did a little search and found a beautiful map from a fellow blogger (scroll down to see it):

A Hobbit Hole is a really neat idea for a dollhouse! Maybe some day...

Here is how you can have your own miniature Middle Earth map:

1- Download the image. Remember, this image has a copyright. You can only do this for personal use, not for selling it in any way!

2- Open your favorite photo-editor program (Adobe Photoshop is great for miniatures!)

3- Change the size of the map to your desired size. Change the pixel size to 300 pixels/inch.

4- Print it in high quality paper.

5- Frame it, hang it directly on the wall of your dollhouse or display it over a table.
